About the Band

Empire Pipe Band was founded in the Spring of 2014 under the direction and leadership of Pipe Major Brendan Gomez, Pipe Sergeant Jen Westphal, and Drum Sergeant Liz Belmont. The band started in Grade 4, where it competed at the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville Canada and at numerous competitions on the east coast. Three years into its existence, the band was upgraded to Grade 3. Now under the direction and leadership of P/M Gomez and new Drum  Sergeant Alex Robertson, the band is striving to be upgraded to Grade 2 and to compete at the 2020 World Pipe Band Championships. The band is a member of the EUSPBA and holds practices both in Yonkers, NY and Danbury, CT.

Pipe Major

Brendan Gomez

Brendan Gomez started playing pipes at a young age with Blackthorn Pipe Band. Brendan quickly excelled and began competing with Saffron United Pipe Band and Bergen Irish Pipe Band at a grade 3 level. Brendan then moved to competing with New York Metro Pipe band, where he won the Grade 3B World Pipe Band Championships with the band in 2011. He then continued with the band to win the Grade 2 North American Championships in Canada in 2012. Brendan then competed with the Grade 1   78th Fraser Halifax Citadel Pipe Band under Alex Gandy and his instructor, Bruce Gandy, during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Brendan has also competed with the City of Dunedin Pipe Band and in 2018 played during their winning run at the World Pipe Band Championships in Grade 2. Brendan has also been a successful competitor in the Grade 1 solo circuit. 

Drum Sergeant

Alex Robertson

Alex initially learned drumming from his Scottish-born father, Jeff Robertson, playing in a local band in New Haven, CT, Alex first competed with the University of Bedfordshire Pipe Band while at school in London, England, and upon returning to the states became leading drummer of the Rhode Island Highlanders Pipe Band. He then progressed to the Tulach Ard Pipe Band under Scott Armit. Alex then went up to Ontario, Canada to play under Doug Stronach in the Grade 1 Totonto Police Pipe Band for 5 years, winning several North American Drum Corps titles. After a hiatus and brief stint with the New York Metro Pipe Band , Alex joined the Manchester, CT Pipe Band, contributing to the band’s teaching programs and competitive success. In 2017, Alex joined the Triumph Street Pipe Band of Vancouver, Canada, to play under World Drum Corp Champion Gary Corkin. This new corp placed in the top six at the British Championship and the band were finalists the 2017 Worlds. Along with his buddy and corp member at Triumph Street, Ryan Jones, Alex started the Connecticut Drumming Clique in late 2017 to foster new drummers and to provide an outlet for talented players in the area. In early 2018, the opportunity presented itself for Alex to take the competitive minded group of his corp to partner with the Empire Pipe Band, where he and PM Brendan Gomez see a bright future for the tri-state area and beyond. Outside the band, Alex is the director of advertising at a publishing house in CT and actively plays club soccer. Alex and his wife Sarah live in CT, Along with their daughter and are expecting their son in early 2019!

Pipe Sergeant

Jen Westphal

Jen Westphal first picked up the pipes for a year of tuition from Peter Skae when she was in the 4th grade. She picked the pipes up again in high school and began competing with Bergen Irish Pipe Band in the Grade 3. She went on the compete with New York Metro Pipe Band before starting Empire Pipe Band with Brendan Gomez and James Piccione in 2014. 2018 was her best year on the solo circuit: she took first place in Grade 2 Piobaireached contest at Winter Storm, won the overall Grade 2 contest at the CLASP World Solo Piping Championship, and finished in first place in the Grade 2 EUSPBA overall season standings. In addition, she won the Janet H. Campbell Memorial Trophy for the overall Grade 2 MSR contest at Fair Hill, was Piper of the Day at Glasgow Lands, and was Grade 2 Piper of the Day the the Capital District Scottish Games. She was upgraded to Grade 1 that off-season. She has received instruction from Joe Brady Senior, Donald Lindsay, Matt Welch, and currently Glenn Brown
